Diet

Rusty-spotted cats primarily feed on small mammals, birds, and insects. They are also known to eat lizards, frogs, and other small vertebrates. These nocturnal hunters rely on their stealth and agility to catch prey. They primarily hunt on the ground but may climb trees to escape larger predators. This varied diet helps them adapt to different environments within their range.

Rusty-spotted cats eat small animals like mice and birds. They also catch insects and sometimes eat lizards and frogs. They hunt at night and use their sneaky skills to catch food. They usually stay on the ground but can climb trees if they need to.

Breeding

The breeding season for rusty-spotted cats varies depending on the region, but typically occurs in the spring. Females give birth to one or two kittens after a gestation period of about 65 to 70 days. The mother prepares a den in a secluded location to protect her young. Kittens are born with their eyes closed and are dependent on their mother for food and protection. They reach sexual maturity at around one year old.

Rusty-spotted cats have babies in the spring. The mother has 1 or 2 kittens after being pregnant for about two months. She makes a safe den for her babies. The kittens stay with their mother until they are about one year old.

Habitat

Rusty-spotted cats are found in India, Sri Lanka, and recently in Nepal. They live in a variety of habitats, including dry forests, scrublands, grasslands, and sometimes in agricultural areas. These habitats provide ample cover and prey for hunting. However, habitat destruction and fragmentation pose significant threats to their survival. Conservation efforts focus on protecting these environments and ensuring sustainable practices.

Rusty-spotted cats live in India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. They like dry forests, grasslands, and even some farms. These places give them food and places to hide. Protecting their homes is important to keep them safe.

At the zoo

We have been exhibiting Sri Lankan rusty-spotted cats since 2010. As part of a European breeding program, we successfully bred three kittens in 2011. Currently, we have a new pair that recently mated (April 2018).

Behaviour

Rusty-spotted cats are nocturnal and solitary, spending most of their time alone except during mating season. They are highly agile and can move quickly to catch prey or escape danger. These cats communicate through scent marking and vocalisations. Despite their small size, they are fierce hunters and are very secretive, making them difficult to observe in the wild.
